Raila endorses Maina Njenga for Laikipia Senate seat

July 27, 2022 0
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga has has endorsed ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga as the coalition's sole candidate for the Laikipia Senate seat.

Njenga was endorsed during Raila's tour in the county that saw the former premier broker a deal between Maina and Laikipia Deputy Governor John Mwaniki who was contesting on a Jubilee party ticket.

Mr Odinga, who spoke in Nyahururu, said this was one way that Azimio could ensure that they will bag the seat in the August 9 polls.

“I will take Mr Mwaniki and work with him at the national level, while we leave Mr Njenga to contest the senatorial seat here in Laikipia,” Mr Odinga told the supporters of the two in Nyahururu town.

Mr Odinga said the coalition wants to deny their rivals in Kenya Kwanza a chance to win more seats.

“If we don't engage our constituent parties in the coalition to prevail on their candidates to step down in favour of popular candidates, then we might give our opponents a chance of sweeping more seats,” said Mr Odinga.

He pleaded with voters to only elect leaders affiliated to the Azimio coalition.

“Save me from trouble and give me people I can work with when we form the next government. Elect leaders who are allied to Azimio from governor, senator, MP, woman rep to MCAs because if you don’t do that I will have a hard time delivering my promises to you,” he said.

Mr Njenga will now face off against Mr John Kinyua, who is defending his seat on a UDA ticket.

Others include businessman John Kiama (TSP), Robert Ndung’u (ANC), Henry Kimani of Chama Cha Kazi and independent candidates Steve Chege and Jackson Thengei.

Arrest warrant issued against Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip

November 01, 2021 0
An arrest warrant has been issued against Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip for failing to attend a mention in a Nanyuki Court over the shooting of a 32-year-old woman.

Loitiptip lawyers argued that the Senator sustained injuries on Sunday and he was admitted in hospital with a genuine reason.

However, Principal Magistrate Ben Mararo ordered that Loitiptip should be arrested  if he is not admitted in hospital as alleged or he should present himself to the police for failing to appear in court as required.

Loitiptip's lawyer Rose Wachira argued that a warrant of arrest is unecessary given that he is hospitalized.

On Monday, the Senator was charged in a Nanyuki court with two counts; causing grievous harm and unlawful use of firearms.

Nanyuki Resident Magistrate Vincent Masivo directed directed that Loitiptip should receive back the Ksh500,000 bond that he was fined on October 25 and be charged afresh.

Allegedly, the Lamu Senator got into a confrontation with a woman, Joy Makena, which led to him shooting her. Makena was in the company of her husband Turo Jaso.

Makena stated that the incident occurred next to Nanyuki Ibis Hotel when she was with her husband as they were escorting a friend they had spent the day with and they saw an enraged Loitiptip beating up a woman with a mop.

Loitiptip turned to attack them when they tried to intervene then he dashed to his car and grabbed a firearm.

The Lamu Senator fired twice following the couple running for safety and he ended up shooting Makena in the leg.

Makena added that Loitiptip’s bodyguard managed to restrain the Senator and they fled before police officers arrived at the scene.

Suspected bandits set ablaze a school in Laikipia

August 21, 2021 0
Supected bandits on Friday set ablaze   a school in Laikipia County.

Reportedly, 20 bandits caused the inferno at the education center that was opened and run by conservationist Kuki Gallman.

Sveva Gallman, Gallman's daughter, said workers took three hours to put out the fire that had destroyed the school used by pastoralists' children.

"Over 20 armed bandits were seen entering the institution by our security officers. Later, a huge fire was reported at the institution," she told a local publication.

Sveva added, "It took our workers over three hours to put out the fire. The children have been left with nowhere to learn as several classrooms were badly damaged."

Kuki Gallman, the author of the best-selling book “I Dreamed of Africa”, experienced a bandit attack previously when her ranch was invaded by the bandits who even resulted to shooting her.

Two years ago, the author sustained leg injuries after her her car was shot at.

Officers from the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and Special Unit Forces from the police were last month commissioned by Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i to protect wealthy ranchers who have been in protracted conflicts with the pastoralists.

The CS stated that the ranchers would be protected by a General Service Unit (GSU) camp created by his team.

Two police commanders face bribery charges in Nyahururu

March 03, 2021 0
Two sub county police commanders were  arraigned at a Nyahururu court on Tuesday and charged with corruption.

The duo, Sub County Police Commander Likoni Jane Kavutha and Nyandarua West Deputy Sub County Commander Ephraim Karani, denied the charges before Nyahururu Chief Magistrate Judith Wanjala.

The senior cops were arrested last week in Nyeri at the EACC Regional Headquarters.

The charge sheet indicated that on December 13, 2018 when they were both serving in South KInangop, Nyandarua County, they solicited money from two residents.

Jane Kavutha was Officer Commanding Division (OCPD) and Ephraim Karani was District Administration Police Commander (DAPC) at the time.

The prosecution told the court that the duo demanded the Ksh. 500,000 bribe as an inducement to effect an eviction order validly issued by a court against illegal occupants of a private property.

Allegedly, they also demanded a Ksh. 300,000 bribe from  a resident, Joyce Wachuka, so as not to effect another court order.

However, according to their lawyer Chege Gakuhi,  there was no substantive evidence to show that the two senior cops received the bribe.

They were released on a cash bail of Ksh. 200,000 each or a Ksh. 500,000 bond.

The case will be mentioned on March 23, 2021.

Former Laikipia East MP charged with title deed theft

January 14, 2021 0
Former Laikipia East Member of Parliament  Anthony Mutahi has been charged with stealing a title deed from the Ministry of Lands headquarters at Ardhi House.

The allegedly stolen title deed is of a parcel of land valued at Ksh18.8 million.

Mutahi appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Thursday, January 14, 2021.

Having denied the charges against him, the former legislator was released on a Ksh300,000 cash bail or Ksh1 million bond.

In 2020, Mutahi was in court over another controversy centred around land ownership.

In August, he was sentenced to a six-month civil jail for building a house on a disputed piece of land.

The former legislator had been charged for interfering with the land suit between him and Stuart Richard Cunningham in Nanyuki despite court orders.

Justice Mary Oundo had ruled, “Mutahi is hereby committed to civil jail for a term of six months for contempt of court for deliberately disobeying orders of this court given on November 8, 2017.”

An application filed by the complainant under urgency at the Environment and Land Court in Nyeri sought to have Mutahi committed to civil jail for developing the land in Nanyuki against a court order.

Judge Joseph Onguto of the High Court at Milimani, Nairobi in 2016 ordered the former lawmaker not to interfere with the land until the ownership dispute was determined.

Also, in 2017, Judge Lucy Waithaka restrained him and his representatives from interfering with the land pending the case's hearing and determination.

Mutahi had argued before the court that he was supposed to occupy 18 acres of the land while Cunningham claimed that the land was invaded by an armed gang in a bid to take over the property.

At the time, the complainant admitted that he did not have a title deed to prove ownership of the land 25 years after buying the land as he claimed.

He therefore sued the registrar of lands for issuing a title deed to a third party, Mutahi.
