Suspected bandits set ablaze a school in Laikipia

Supected bandits on Friday set ablaze   a school in Laikipia County.

Reportedly, 20 bandits caused the inferno at the education center that was opened and run by conservationist Kuki Gallman.

Sveva Gallman, Gallman's daughter, said workers took three hours to put out the fire that had destroyed the school used by pastoralists' children.

"Over 20 armed bandits were seen entering the institution by our security officers. Later, a huge fire was reported at the institution," she told a local publication.

Sveva added, "It took our workers over three hours to put out the fire. The children have been left with nowhere to learn as several classrooms were badly damaged."

Kuki Gallman, the author of the best-selling book “I Dreamed of Africa”, experienced a bandit attack previously when her ranch was invaded by the bandits who even resulted to shooting her.

Two years ago, the author sustained leg injuries after her her car was shot at.

Officers from the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and Special Unit Forces from the police were last month commissioned by Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i to protect wealthy ranchers who have been in protracted conflicts with the pastoralists.

The CS stated that the ranchers would be protected by a General Service Unit (GSU) camp created by his team.
