Arrest warrant issued against Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip

An arrest warrant has been issued against Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip for failing to attend a mention in a Nanyuki Court over the shooting of a 32-year-old woman.

Loitiptip lawyers argued that the Senator sustained injuries on Sunday and he was admitted in hospital with a genuine reason.

However, Principal Magistrate Ben Mararo ordered that Loitiptip should be arrested  if he is not admitted in hospital as alleged or he should present himself to the police for failing to appear in court as required.

Loitiptip's lawyer Rose Wachira argued that a warrant of arrest is unecessary given that he is hospitalized.

On Monday, the Senator was charged in a Nanyuki court with two counts; causing grievous harm and unlawful use of firearms.

Nanyuki Resident Magistrate Vincent Masivo directed directed that Loitiptip should receive back the Ksh500,000 bond that he was fined on October 25 and be charged afresh.

Allegedly, the Lamu Senator got into a confrontation with a woman, Joy Makena, which led to him shooting her. Makena was in the company of her husband Turo Jaso.

Makena stated that the incident occurred next to Nanyuki Ibis Hotel when she was with her husband as they were escorting a friend they had spent the day with and they saw an enraged Loitiptip beating up a woman with a mop.

Loitiptip turned to attack them when they tried to intervene then he dashed to his car and grabbed a firearm.

The Lamu Senator fired twice following the couple running for safety and he ended up shooting Makena in the leg.

Makena added that Loitiptip’s bodyguard managed to restrain the Senator and they fled before police officers arrived at the scene.
