Two police commanders face bribery charges in Nyahururu

Two sub county police commanders were  arraigned at a Nyahururu court on Tuesday and charged with corruption.

The duo, Sub County Police Commander Likoni Jane Kavutha and Nyandarua West Deputy Sub County Commander Ephraim Karani, denied the charges before Nyahururu Chief Magistrate Judith Wanjala.

The senior cops were arrested last week in Nyeri at the EACC Regional Headquarters.

The charge sheet indicated that on December 13, 2018 when they were both serving in South KInangop, Nyandarua County, they solicited money from two residents.

Jane Kavutha was Officer Commanding Division (OCPD) and Ephraim Karani was District Administration Police Commander (DAPC) at the time.

The prosecution told the court that the duo demanded the Ksh. 500,000 bribe as an inducement to effect an eviction order validly issued by a court against illegal occupants of a private property.

Allegedly, they also demanded a Ksh. 300,000 bribe from  a resident, Joyce Wachuka, so as not to effect another court order.

However, according to their lawyer Chege Gakuhi,  there was no substantive evidence to show that the two senior cops received the bribe.

They were released on a cash bail of Ksh. 200,000 each or a Ksh. 500,000 bond.

The case will be mentioned on March 23, 2021.
