Naomi Osaka has pulled out of next week's Berlin WTA grasscourt tournament, just days after her controversial exit from the French Open, the organisers confirmed on Monday.
"We have received notification that Naomi Osaka cannot start in Berlin. After consulting her management, she will take a break," said a spokesman for the Berlin tournament, which starts June 14.
Osaka latest move cast doubt on her participation in the Tokyo Olympics.
The 23-year-old four-time Grand Slam winner has been in the spotlight since withdrawing from the French Open last week after her dispute over her refusal to attend a press conference.
As a result, the French Tennis officials fined her $15000 and threatened to axe her from the tournament for failing to honour a mandatory media commitment promoting her exit.
The Japanese star attributed her failure to appear before the media to her ongoing battle with depression and anxiety.
