National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has been crowned as the Spokesperson of Mt Kenya religion in a special coronation ceremony held at Mukurwe Wa Nyagathanga in Murang'a, the Agikuyu people's Garden of Eden.
The ceremony was a culmination of a week-long series of traditional events that saw Muturi undergo a strict regimen at his Thigiri home, Embu County.
During the time, Muturi who was in seclusion was expected to dine only in special food, bathe in a special manner and abstain from sex.
The ceremony was presided over by several of the region's elders.
Paul Kagwanja, the patron of the Murang'a elders likened the coronation to the biblical anointing of King David, the last born son of Jesse and a shepherd and downplayed assertions that the coronation was an attack on President Uhuru Kenyatta who is the region's kingpin and is still in power.
"When David was anointed king, Saul’s rule continued and they worked confidently; there is no conflict between him and the president,” Prof Kagwanja said. “He is our David."
During the ceremony, Muturi was dressed in a ceremonial goatskin, headgear and a flywhisk
He promised to live up to the confidence bestowed in him as the community's spokesperson by uniting the region.
Muturi's coronation was endorsed by Governors Muthomi Njuki( Tharaka Nithi) Kiraitu Murungi( Meru) and Martin Wambora( Embu).
