UDA nominations:Dr. Mutai takes lead in tight Kericho gubernatorial race

University don Eric Mutai is on the verge of being declared the winner of the UDA gubernatorial race nominations in Kericho.

As of Friday midday, Dr Mutai was leading in the race for the UDA governor ticket with close to 18000 votes against his closest challenger and former Devolution CS Charles Keter who had garnered 12,136 votes as vote counting continued in some polling stations.

Taking to his official social media handle, Dr Mutai thanked Kericho residents of turning up in large numbers to vote "You are a wonderful family. We really thank God. Thanks a lot for your support guys."

On Tuesday, the don received a major boost in his bid after Engineer Fred Kirui who eyeing the UDA ticket quit and opted to be his running mate.

Former KPA director Fred Kirui quits Kericho governor race, backs Dr Mutai

Former Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) director and an aspirant for Kericho gubernatorial seat Engineer Fred Kirui has dropped his bid and instead backed Dr Eric Mutai.

According to an agreement seen by the LATEST, Dr Mutai will run for the county top seat as governor while Engineer Kirui be his running mate.

The signing of the agreement comes hot on heels of United Democratic Alliance ( UDA) party primaries set for April 14th and that has attracted a host of leaders who include former Devolution CS Charles Keter.

Dr, Mutai former lecturer at the University of Embu and a front runner in the race is making his first attempt at the seat while Kirui is in his second attempt.

Other candidates who have declared interests in succeeding Prof Paul Chepkwony who is serving his second and last term include deputy governor Lily Ngok and Prof James Sang.

Mob in Kericho lynches man for allegedly killing his father

A mob in Kericho County lynched a man for allegedly killing his father before burying his body.

The alleged killer hailed from Makiche Village in Ainamoi.

Police in the county are probing the reported murder incident.

The body of the man's father was found decomposing in a fresh grave in their compound, angering residents who then rounded up the man.

As part of the probe, police will exhume the old man's body.

The son's body was moved to Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary.

Bus with 50 passengers overturns at Fort Ternan, several people feared dead

Several people are feared dead while others sustained injuries after a bus from Nairobi overturned at Fort Ternan in Kericho on the afternoon of Monday, October 11.

According to a police officer in Kericho, the Mbukinya Bus, which was headed to Kisumu from Nairobi, overturned at the black spot resulting in casualties.

The PSV veered off the road and hit a guardrail.

Emergency calls were responded to by a medical team from Londiani District Hospital who rushed to aid the accident victims.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the accident occurred because the road was slippery since it was raining. However, the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.

In recent years, Fort Ternan has been marked as a black spot after recording a number of accidents including a 2018 crash that claimed over 50 lives.

10 survivors of the accident involving a Homeboyz bus were rushed to a nearby hospital in Muhoroni.

According to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), there are more than 273 accident blackspots across the country.

199 of those blackspots are located in the Northern corridor.

Recent statistics by NTSA show that as of September 20, 2021, road accident fatalities had increased by 25 per cent.

Five feared dead following a road crash on Kericho-Nakuru Highway

Five people are feared dead following a grisly road accident involving a Passenger Service Vehicle ( PSV) near Londiani Junction along the Kericho-Nakuru Highway.

According to reports, the accident occurred after a matatu lost control following a tyre burst and rolled several times.

Four people are said to have died on the spot while another one is reported to have succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital.

The other injured passenger are receiving treatment at the Londiani Sub-County Hospital while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

Form 3 boy kills father for allegedly selling his cock

Police are holding a Form Three male student who attacked and killed his father at Barotion village in Londiani, Kericho County.

According to the area chief Sarah Sigey, the boy arrived home and discovered that the father had sold his cock without his knowledge and an altercation ensued between the two.

The boy then picked a club and used it to hit his father several times on the head.

The 50-year-old man was rescued by neighbors

who rushed to the homestead and they took

him to Londiani Sub-county hospital where he succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.

The student surrendered himself to Londiani police station after committing the offense and is currently there awaiting arraignment.

The deceased’s body was moved to St. Joseph hospital mortuary in Molo. Investigations into the incident are underway.

Lily Ngok sworn in as Kericho Deputy Governor

Ms Lily Ngok has been sworn in as Kericho County Deputy Governor.

Ms Ngok took the oath of office Wednesday following her approval by the county assembly

She will replace the late Susan Kikwai who succumbed to coronavirus related complications on March 20th, 2021

Members of the selection panel chaired by Speaker Dominic Rono vetted and approved Ms Ngok nomination and forwarded it to the assembly where she was unanimously approved by the MCAs.

Prior to her nomination, She served as CEC Education, Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs.

She becomes the county's second deputy governor.

Kericho Governor Chepkwony nominates Lily Ngok as his deputy

Lily Chepnge'tich Ngok has been appointed the new Deputy Governor for Kericho County

Ms Ngok who is currently serving as the County Executive Committee member for the Education, Sports, Culture and Social Service if approved by the county assembly will replace the late Susan Kikwai who succumbed to coronavirus complications on March 20th.

In a letter dated March 25th addressed to Kericho County Assembly Speaker Dominic Rono, Governor Prof Paul Chepkwony stated that he had taken into account that the late Kikwai hailed from Kipkelion East and hence the nomination address the continuity in elective seats and gender balance in his government.

Governor Chepkwony further stated that he made the nomination according to article 182 (2) of the constitution as read with Section 32(C) and 32(D) of the County Government Act No 11 and Section 22,25 and 26 of the Election Act, 2011 calling on the Member of the County Assemblies the expedite the nominee's vetting and approval.

Kericho Deputy Governor Kikwai laid to rest

Kericho County Deputy Governor Susan Kikwai was last to rest on Tuesday at Tugunon village, Kipkelion East constituency.

Kericho Governor Prof Paul Chepkwony led several leaders in paying tribute to the deceased.

Prof Chepkwony eulogised the late Kikwai as a loyal and dedicated leader.

Area Senator Aaron Cheruiyot who was also present during the funeral service called on the government to halt no essential service and allocate more resources to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The late Kikwai succumbed to coronavirus on Saturday at Siloam Hospital in Kericho.

Kericho Deputy Governor Susan Kikwai is dead

Kericho Deputy Governor Susan Kikwai is dead.

His family confirmed the news on Saturday, noting that she succumbed to suspected Covid-19 complication at Siloam Hospital in Kericho.

Reports indicate that she has been at the health facility since last week.

Ms Kikwai has been serving as Governor Paul Chepkwony deputy since 2013.

Two killed after matatu plunges into Sondu Miriu River

A 14 seater matatu plunged into Sondu Miriu River leaving two people dead and several others injured .

Confirming the incident Kericho County police commander Silas Gichunge said the matatu was heading to Eldoret when it collided with a lorry which was ferrying mattresses towards Kisii.

The accident caused a huge traffic snarl up on the usually busy Kisii-Kisumu highway.

The driver of the matatu died on the spot while one passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at Sigowet Hospital.

The police boss said the driver of the ill-fated matatu lost control of his vehicle due to what is suspected to be brake failure.

The number of injured passengers could not be immediately established.

Drama in Kapkatet Hospital after man presumed dead resurrects

There was drama at Kapkatet sub-county hospital in Kericho on Tuesday night when a 32-year-old man who had been presumed dead and taken to the mortuary regained consciousness close to three hours later.

Mortuary attendants were getting ready to embalm Peter Kigen’s body when they noticed some movements.

Kigen, a resident of Kibwastuiyo village in Bureti Constituency, is said to have fainted while at home before his family rushed him to hospital.

His younger brother, Kevin Kipkurui, said he was present when Kigen fainted.

With the help of their cousin, they took Kigen to the hospital at 5.30 pm where he was allegedly pronounced dead on arrival at the facility .

Kericho man chops off his manhood

A 70-years-old tea farmer from Getarwet Sub-location in Bureti constituency, Kericho County, is fighting for his life at Litein Mission Hospital after cchoppyg off his manhood.

According to Getarwet Sub-Location Assistant Chief Sylvester Sigei, the man took a kitchen knife and mutilated his manhood after his family accused him of cheating on his wife.

“The man was rushed to Litein hospital for reconstructive surgery,” said Mr Sigei

A source at the hospital said the procedure to reattach the hanging manhood lasted for three hours.

Kericho county assembly shut as staffer test positive

A staff member of the Kericho County Assembly has tested positive for Covid-19 forcing the assembly to suspend all operations for 15 days.

Clerk Martin Epus wrote a memo directing all staff members to proceed on a leave from Friday, October 23.

He urged them to fully adhere to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the virus.

The clerk emphasized that the only staff members that will be allowed in the assembly are those that offer essential services such as committee services, finance, and security.

According to him, all staff members will be tested for Covid-19 as arrangements are already in place.

Epus said, "The doctors are on call from today (Friday) to the end of next week. You are asked to volunteer to undertake the test."

The assembly's closure comes after Homa Bay County Assembly closure on the same issue.

Eight senior officers in Nandi County also tested positive for Covid-19 leading to the suspension of the services offered from the office's headquarters in Kapsabet town.

According to the County Secretary Francis Sang,

the senior officers were from the economic planning, health, education, and finance departments.

He confirmed this on Monday, citing that the particular departments, as well as the offices of the governor and his deputy, will be closed for two weeks.
