A 14 seater matatu plunged into Sondu Miriu River leaving two people dead and several others injured .
Confirming the incident Kericho County police commander Silas Gichunge said the matatu was heading to Eldoret when it collided with a lorry which was ferrying mattresses towards Kisii.
The accident caused a huge traffic snarl up on the usually busy Kisii-Kisumu highway.
The driver of the matatu died on the spot while one passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at Sigowet Hospital.
The police boss said the driver of the ill-fated matatu lost control of his vehicle due to what is suspected to be brake failure.
The number of injured passengers could not be immediately established.
