Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa on the run after allegedly shooting, Killing opponent's aide

Police in Bungoma have launched a manhunt for Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Wekesa Barasa following a shooting incident at a polling station that left a rival's aide dead on Tuesday evening.

The incident which occurred in Chebukhwabi Primary School in Kibingei ward left a body guard of his closest rival, Mr Brian Khaemba of DAP-K party, dead.

While addressing the press at Kimilili police station,Bungoma County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti said that they are pursuing the lawmaker.

"We want him to surrender to police wherever he is. If any member of the public spots him, let them alert the police," he said.

According to a police report, Mr Khaemba was accompanied by his bodyguard when he arrived at Chebukwabi polling station to witness the counting of votes. This is where he encountered Mr Barasa.

But as he was leaving the polling station , the first-term MP followed him out ordering him to stop.

Police allege that Mr Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Mr Khaemba's aide, Mr Brian Olunga.

Mr Olunga was rushed to Kimilili sub-county hospital where he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment

A road accident involving a Toyota Noah and two trucks on the Eldoret-Malaba Highway has claimed the life of one person, leaving two others injured.

According to police, the Toyota Noah veered off the road after it was hit by a truck that lost control of its breaks at River Nzoia bridge.

The truck also veered off the road after hitting a sand-transporting truck.

According to Matete Sub-County Commander Thomas Ototo, the truck driver died while the other two drivers and the Turn boy of the sand-transporting were rushed to Webuye County Hospital.

He said, “The truck burst into flames after veering off the road. The truck burst into flames killing the driver on the spot. However, the Noah driver had some injuries on the head.”

The three vehicles were headed towards the same direction, the police said.

An eye witness said, "The trailer was speeding after its breaks failed while approaching the bridge. A motorist heading to Webuye tried to overtake it but hit from behind and veered off the road. "

Self-confessed child serial killer Masten Wanjala killed by mob in Bungoma

Self-confessed serial killer Masten Wanjala has been beaten to death by a mob at Mukhweya village, Bungoma County just days after he escaped from police custody in Nairobi.

The area chief Boniface Ndiera confirmed the incident saying he had received a call from a local who claimed that Wanjala had been spotted.

" There some children who we're heading to school when they spotted him and went to report to the police ,” Mr. Ndiera told a local news outlet.

Form 2 girl kills herself at her boyfriend’s house in Bungoma

A Form Two student at Naburereya Secondary School in Bungoma County committed suicide on Monday after her parents confronted her for refusing to report back to school.

21-year-old Joan Wekesa hanged herself at her boyfriend’s house at Kabula market.

The mother demanded that she goes back to school when she confronted her after visiting the boyfriend's house.

She said, “I was told by a neighbor that Joan had spent a night with a man who works at a local concrete making company but when I came and questioned her she looked at me and kept quiet.”

After confronting the girl, the mother left her and went back home to inform her father.

However, she said when he went back to the boyfriend's house together with the husband,where they found her lifeless body was dangling on a rope.

The mother added that Joan refused to go to school, threatening ikoto commit suicide if they continued pestering her.

The deceased’s body was taken to Bungoma hospital mortuary.

Police arrest four suspects linked to brutal murder of Mt Elgon chief

Four suspects have been arrested over brutal murder of a national government administration officer in Mt Elgon, Bungoma County.

Last week on Friday, the body of the Chepyuk Location Chief, Geoffrey Kipsang, was found buried in a shallow grave in a maize plantation about three kilometers from his homestead.

The death of the 52-year-old instigated irate residents to storm a local illicit brew den, torching houses that they suspected harbored the killers.

It is believed that the four suspects, two men and two women, in police custody cooperated with others who police are still pursuing.

One suspect who allegedly lured the chief into his unfortunate fate was killed by the irate residents.

Confirming the arrest of the four suspects, Bungoma County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti said, “You cannot take law in your hands and kill a government official and expect to go scot free, I want to tell all those who were involved that they will be arrested and face the full wrath of the law.”

Police arrest 11 people in Bungoma for flouting curfew rule

11 people in Bungoma have been arrested by police for flouting the 7pm to 4am curfew imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the county.

Bungoma County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti confirmed the arrest saying majority of the people arrested are boda boda riders and hotel operators.

The suspects will be arraigned in court for acting contrary to Covid-19 protocols.

Police officers who encourage people to flout the protocols by receiving bribes will be dealt with accordingly, the County Commissioner warned.

Bungoma, which borders Uganda, continues to experience a high rate of Covid-19 infections.

Man collapses and dies at wife's burial while eulogizing her

A Kenyan man, Daniel Tauni, collapsed on Friday, March 19 at the wife's burial and was pronounced dead on reaching Navakholo Sub-County where he was rushed.

The 55-year-old suddenly collapsed when he was eulogizing his wife, Janet Koikoi.

According to reports from his relatives, Wilson Maike and Nuru Namsonge, Koikoi succumbed to Tuberculosis(TB) complications last week.

Her burial continued although in deep sorrow after the sad news.

Tauni's family said that he did not have a history of heart problems. The cause of his death is yet to be determined.

His body was taken to the Webuye County Hospital morgue.

Five-year-old girl's body found dumped in cattle dip

The body of a five-year-old girl was found dumped in a cattle dip in Sirende village, Tongaren, Bungoma County.

Jayline Gloria, who was a pre-unit pupil at Sirende Academy, reportedly went missing last week after an unknown bodoboda rider picked her.

A missing person report was filed but she was still not found.

Residents of Sirende Village were dumpfounded to learn that her body had been dumped in a cattle dip which is less than a kilometer away from her parent’s home.

According to reports from initial investigations, Jayline might have been strangled.

Her parents, Kelvin Sabwami and Jackline Adhiambo, were heartbroken and saddened by her painful demise.

“We have been agonized by her death. We don't know why someone killed her. We have left everything to God,” Sabwami, the father said.

According to Tongaren police boss Thomas Tukei, investigations on the matter are underway and the culprits will be brought to book.

Sirende Academy director advised parents to have proper background information of bodaboda riders they assign to pick their children.

Chesamisi High School closed indefinitely after riots

Chesamisi Boys High School in Bungoma County has been closed indefinitely after student riots in the School last night.

The students, who were protesting changes in the institution’s entertainment programme, destroyed property of unknown value.

A computer lab and two vehicles, one of which belonged to the school principal were destroyed during the Saturday 11pm strike.

Bungoma risks losing World Bank cash over infighting graft claims

Bungoma risks being dropped out of a list of counties benefiting from a Sh350 million annual grant from the World Bank following graft claims and infighting over agriculture projects.

The projects are funded by the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) implemented by the Kenyan government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, State Department for Agriculture (SDA), with funding support from the World Bank.

The project aims at increasing agricultural productivity and profitability of targeted rural communities in selected counties and in the event of an eligible crisis or emergency, to provide immediate and effective response.

However, the NARIGIP project is facing a major crisis after claims of embezzlement of funds by county officials were raised to the World Bank prompting a forensic audit.

After the audit, World Bank recommended that the project is stopped.

At the center of the matter are Bungoma CECM in charge of Agriculture Chirasha Makanda, his chief officer John Wasike and one of the project heads Mary Situma .

Trouble started when Makanda and Wasike wrote to World Bank requesting Situma be removed from the project citing incompetency.

Situma however wrote back to the World Bank citing graft in the project saying she could only hand over after some audit queries are dealt with and adding she didn’t want to be followed thereafter because of mistakes committed by her seniors.

“The CECM for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Irrigation and Cooperatives, Mr Matthews Wanjala Makanda, has on many occasions put pressure on me to resign to pave way for his dubious deals which I have since declined ,” read the letter from Situma to the World Bank in part.

Lugulu Girls staffers suspended for allegedly inciting students to protest

Five support staff members at Lugulu Girs’ High School in Bungoma County have been sent on compulsory leave for allegedly inciting students to stage protests last week.

The staffers are the school nurse, cateress, storekeeper and two cooks.

A suspension letter issued to one of the workers indicates that the leave will end on January 10, 2021.

The students had taken to the streets on Tuesday to protest over alleged defilement of one of their colleagues.

The victim is said to have been defiled on Saturday, December 5, while taking a bath just before the morning preps.

Anglican Church of Kenya begins search for new Butere Bishop

The Anglican Church of Kenya(ACK) in Butere has begun the process of electing a new Bishop following the resignation of Bishop Timothy Wambunya in September this year. Bishop Wambunya resigned citing health and family issues.

The top church leadership met at St Luke's diocesan headquarters in Butere to start the process of replacement. Bishop Joseph Wandera of Bishop Hannington Church in Mumias was appointed to act in an interim capacity.

Rev Wambunya was consecrated on October 6, 2013 as the third Bishop of Butere. His family resides in the UK and he cited the need to be with them as the reason for leaving service in Kenya.

ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit attended the meeting that brought together all diocesan leaders forom the Western region.
