CCM's Isaac Ruto concedes defeat in Bomet governorship race

August 23, 2022 0
Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party Leader, Isaac Ruto, has conceded defeat in the race to become the fourth governor of Bomet, a significant support for Governor-Elect, Hillary Barchok, of the United Democratic Alliance whose swearing-in is scheduled for 25th August.

Barchok defended his seat through a hotly contested race characterized by political decisions that set off pressure in the County.

Prof. Barchok, who will be serving his second and last term in office, garnered  158,898 votes against Mr. Ruto's 137,323 votes, while Mr. Benard Mutai (ANC) alias Mulo got 1,915 votes as Mr. Andrew Towett (GP) got 508 votes in the August 9th polls.

Mr Ruto, the former Council of Governors Chairperson and first Bomet Governor, said he had decided to take the decision to allow reconciliation among electorates  in the county.

On Saturday night, he appeared in the public for the first time since the declaration of the gubernatorial election results and reports of his hospitalization and said it was time for the residents of Bomet to resume their normal business.

He spoke after holding a meeting with Prof Barchok and Kericho Governor-Elect, Dr. Erick Mutai at his Tumoi home in Chepalungu Constituency

" My political record speaks for itself, that I am not that kind of a person who disputes election results and interferes with the term of elected leaders. I respect the will of the people in any election," Mr Ruto said.

Nine prisoners escape from police custody

October 04, 2021 0
Nine prisoners on Monday, October 4, escaped from Bomet police station where they were being held.

According to Bomet Central Sub County police boss, four of the nine escapees were juveniles.

Imamai explained that in Bomet and Kericho juvenile prisoners are always held in cells instead of prisons because prisons in the two counties do not have a facility for underage offenders.

A police report indicates that while the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) was making the routine checks at the station, he discovered that some of the suspects were missing.

It is believed that the nine people escaped by slipping through an opening they created after cutting a number of metal grills at the back of the cells.

The tools they used to cut the grills are yet to be identified by police and how they managed to escape despite the presence of two officers who were manning the station is yet to be determined.

According to Imamai, the nine had been accused of various offenses and were set to appear in court on October 4.

Two of them were arrested for being in possession of illicit brew and three others were scheduled to face theft charges.

One of the escapees has been arrested and a manhunt for the other suspects is underway as the one who is currently in police custody is helping the police to trace the eight others.

A dormitory at Kimulot Boys High School in Bomet County has been reduced to ashes following a morning inferno.

Property of unknown value was destroyed in the 5 am fire whose cause is yet to be established.

“The fire has been contained from spreading to other structures in the school through an effort by members of the public, students and fire marshals from the county government of Bomet,” Stanley Mutai, the county disaster management officer said.

Last week alone, dormitories at Cheborgei Secondary School (Kericho) and Olomirani Secondary School in Narok County burnt down.

On Wednesday, Education CS Prof George Magoha banned small-bottle sanitizers in schools over recent fire incidents.

Speaking after meeting education stakeholders at Our Lady of Fatima Girls Secondary School in Kariobangi North, the CS said learners have been using the sanitizers to start fires in institutions.

“I want to tell teachers that they must not allow small-bottle sanitizers into schools.

“If any child has portable sanitizer, it should be taken and kept and given when the child is leaving school.

“We have already seen that a fire was started using a sanitizer in one of the schools.”

3 dead, several injured in a ghastly accident in Bomet

November 17, 2020 0
Three people died in a ghastly road accident  after a matatu rammed into a saloon car at Chepkosa area along the Kaplong-Narok highway.

Nine other people were injured in the accident which occurred on Tuesday 17 at 3pm.

The matatu hit a pothole and its tyres burst such that it lost control and got into a head-on collision with the saloon car coming from the opposite direction.

The matatu landed in a ditch after rolling several times.

According to Bomet sub-county police commander Musa Omari, the injured were rushed to Tenwek Mission Hospital. The saloon car driver was among those injured.

However, the police are still searching for the matatu driver who fled after the accident.

Omari said, “We are still yet to find the driver of the matatu who went missing after the accident…we want him to come and record a statement."

The bodies of the 3 people were taken to Longisa Referral Hospital morgue while the wrecked vehicles were towed to Bomet police station.

According to preliminary investigations, the matatu was carrying excess passengers, contrary to the measures by the government on curbing the spread of Covid-19. There were two extra passengers in the matatu.

Witnesses told the press that KENHA's failure to refill potholes along the route makes it dangerous and prone to accidents as several accidents have occurred at the same spot.

Weston Kilel lamented, “We have always asked them to help us repair these potholes but they have turned a deaf ear…the potholes are deep such that when you hit them, it causes a tyre to burst."
