Nine prisoners escape from police custody

Nine prisoners on Monday, October 4, escaped from Bomet police station where they were being held.

According to Bomet Central Sub County police boss, four of the nine escapees were juveniles.

Imamai explained that in Bomet and Kericho juvenile prisoners are always held in cells instead of prisons because prisons in the two counties do not have a facility for underage offenders.

A police report indicates that while the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) was making the routine checks at the station, he discovered that some of the suspects were missing.

It is believed that the nine people escaped by slipping through an opening they created after cutting a number of metal grills at the back of the cells.

The tools they used to cut the grills are yet to be identified by police and how they managed to escape despite the presence of two officers who were manning the station is yet to be determined.

According to Imamai, the nine had been accused of various offenses and were set to appear in court on October 4.

Two of them were arrested for being in possession of illicit brew and three others were scheduled to face theft charges.

One of the escapees has been arrested and a manhunt for the other suspects is underway as the one who is currently in police custody is helping the police to trace the eight others.
