3 dead, several injured in a ghastly accident in Bomet

Three people died in a ghastly road accident  after a matatu rammed into a saloon car at Chepkosa area along the Kaplong-Narok highway.

Nine other people were injured in the accident which occurred on Tuesday 17 at 3pm.

The matatu hit a pothole and its tyres burst such that it lost control and got into a head-on collision with the saloon car coming from the opposite direction.

The matatu landed in a ditch after rolling several times.

According to Bomet sub-county police commander Musa Omari, the injured were rushed to Tenwek Mission Hospital. The saloon car driver was among those injured.

However, the police are still searching for the matatu driver who fled after the accident.

Omari said, “We are still yet to find the driver of the matatu who went missing after the accident…we want him to come and record a statement."

The bodies of the 3 people were taken to Longisa Referral Hospital morgue while the wrecked vehicles were towed to Bomet police station.

According to preliminary investigations, the matatu was carrying excess passengers, contrary to the measures by the government on curbing the spread of Covid-19. There were two extra passengers in the matatu.

Witnesses told the press that KENHA's failure to refill potholes along the route makes it dangerous and prone to accidents as several accidents have occurred at the same spot.

Weston Kilel lamented, “We have always asked them to help us repair these potholes but they have turned a deaf ear…the potholes are deep such that when you hit them, it causes a tyre to burst."
