Former policeman Derek Chauvin was on Friday sentenced to 22 and half years in prison for the murder of African American George Floyd.
Chauvin 45, gave his condolence to Floyd's family before a Minneapolis court handed him the sentence.
The prosecution had sought a 30-year sentence for Floyd murder that sparked the biggest demonstration for racial justice.
" The sentence is not based on emotion or sympathies, " said Justice Peter Cahill.
In his ruling, Justice Cahill added that his verdict had not been based ' on public opinion ' but on the law acknowledging ' deep and tremendous pain,' the case had caused to the Floyd Family.
