Luis Suarez has broken Christian Ronaldo's goalscoring record as his fine form continues to push Atletico Madrid to the top of the table.
Suarez joined Atletico in September after leaving Barcelona when he learned he was not part of new boss Ronald Koeman’s plans.
Barca captain and close friend Lionel Messi was among the people who were unhappy with the move since Suarez was important to the side.
Former Liverpool team mate and Celta striker Iago Aspas also criticised Barcelona’s handling of Suarez.
He praised Atletico for sensing an opportunity and taking advantage of it as he insisted that they have a real talent on their hands.
“The truth is he was a true forward, a winner even in rondos and training matches. He always gave 200 per cent,” Aspas told Marca.
“What you see on the pitch is what he's like training. He's always been a striker who scores a lot of goals, I think it was a big error on Barcelona's part, but they were struggling a bit with the wage budget. Atletico took advantage, moved quickly and signed a great striker. In fact, many of the points they have won are thanks to him and his finishing,” he added.
The 34-year-old Uruguayan is the current top scorer in La Liga with 16 goals from 17 games so far.
Suarez is now the first player to score 16 goals in his first 17 games for a new team in the Spanish top-flight in the 21st century.
