Courts halts impeachment of Migori County Speaker Boaz Okoth

The Employment and Labour Relations court in Kisumu has issued a conservatory order staying the impeachment of Migori County Assembly Speaker Boaz Okoth.

Okoth was impeached last week over gross misconduct allegations. He is accused of breaking into the county’s finance office and stealing documents, and intimidating any assembly member opposing him, making them unable to perform their duties effectively.

According to court documents, Okoth will continue to serve in his capacity as Migori County Assembly Speaker until his petition on the impeachment is heard and determined.

“The conservatory order of stay to have effect that the Petitioner herein BOAZ OKOTH OWITI do continue serving as the speaker of the County Assembly of Migori pending the hearing of the Petition and Motion,” the court documents read in part.

Justice Stephen Radido similarly ordered the county assembly and region's clerk to restrain from dissolving the County Assembly’s service board.

“That in the event the Migori County Assembly Service Board is dissolved before Service of this Order, then this Court hereby issue a stay of the decision dissolving the County Assembly of Migori service Board pending the hearing and determination of the Petition herein,” the court documents read.  

“The conservatory order of stay to have effect that the Migori County Assembly Service Board which was in office by 8th February, 2022 to continue being in office pending the hearing of the petition and motion.”

42 out of 46 MCAs voted for Okoth's impeachment while two voted against and two others abstained.

Following his impeachment George Reagan Duro was elected the interim speaker.

Police arrest man in Migori over theft

Sleuths have arrested a 26-year-old man in Migori for allegedly being part of a criminal gang targeting boda boda riders. 

After receiving tip from an area resident, detectives in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Suna East arrested 
Samuel Oluoch, alias Dozi. 

The agency made a statement on Sunday saying that detectives recovered three motorbikes in the suspect's possession. 

According to the DCI, Oluoch poses as a mechanic and his network includes a detainee at a nearby prison, whom he is in constant touch with.

The suspect is currently in police custody for further interrogation.

A 57-year-old man kills nephew in suspected love triangle

A 57-year-old man allegedly killed his 28-year-old 
nephew in a suspected love triangle in Ihore Sub-location, Kuria West Sub-county, Migori County. 

Police in the county are in pursuit of the suspect 
identified as Amos Boke who is said to have committed the crime on Friday night after a brief altercation with the nephew identified as Thomas Wambua 

According to a police report, Boke shot Wambua
the chest with an arrow and Wambua died on the spot. 

Preliminary investigations established that the suspect killed the nephew on allegation that he had been in a secret love affair with the suspect's younger wife, Kuria West Sub-county police commander Cleti Kimaiyo said. 

According to the police boss, the incident occurred at around 8.30 pm within their homestead and the suspect escaped immediately but a manhunt for him is underway. 

The deceased’s body was taken to Akidiva Mindira hospital mortuary awaiting the conclusion of the investigations.

Three people under investigation over death of 58-year-old woman in Migori

Three people are being investigated over the death of a 58-year-old woman whose body was found dumped along the road in Ragana area, Suna West, Migori County on Sunday morning. 

According to the village elder Simon Maucha, the deceased's body had some injuries, indicating that unknown attackers murdered her and dumped her body. 

Maucha added that preliminary reports show that the deceased, identified as Leonida Orimba, was spotted at a nearby chang’aa den before her body was found dumped along the road.

The woman is suspected to have died at the chang’aa den and her body sneaked out of the home at night.

The area chief Christopher Owuor confirmed the incident, saying the matter is under police investigation.

According to one of the suspects, the deceased went to her home late in the evening asking for chang’aa which she declined to give her because she was already drunk.

The suspect denied knowing what happened to the deceased after she left the home where they served her food and later escorted her out.

Police arrest seven people in Migori for not wearing masks

Police in Isebania, Migori County conducted a crackdown that led to the arrest of seven people for not wearing masks. 

According to Kuria West Sub-county Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the suspects were to be arraigned on Monday to face charges of flouting Covid-19 regulations.

The suspects include 36-year-old Chacha Gabriel, 26-year-old Henry Mene, 26-year-old Peter Kamau, 38-year-old Collins Kone, 21-year-old Esther Abel and 29-year-old Mary Kerubo. 

The police boss said that the crackdown on people disregarding COVID-19 rules will continue and those flouting the rules should be warned.

Over 2,200 families affected by floods in Migori and Homa Bay

Over 2,200 2,200 families in Migori and Homa Bay counties have been displaced by floods caused by heavy rains in the areas. 

On Monday, some 300 homes were submerged at Kakelo Kakoth location in Migori County, forcing locals to move to safer grounds.

The floods affected 60 households in Lower Karapolo and 99 households in 
West Kanyuor location. 

Lower Central Kadem Chief Philip Orwa said that areas around Kuja River such as Lwanda and Kuja were also flooded.

It was quite a challenge for Nyor Primary School teachers from Lwanda who had to wade through knee-high waters to get to the school. Young pupils skipped school for fear of being carried away by floods.

According to the head teacher of the school Elisha Ondiek, pupils from Kuja area faced great difficulty getting to school.

The flooded schools included Kabuto Primary School, Nyora Primary School, Angugo Primary School and Molly Secondary School. 

In the last three days, heavy rains in Homa Bay County displaced hundreds of families in Rachuonyo North. 

Over 100 households were displaced in Kogembo sub-location in Rachuonyo North sub-county by 
floods that occurred after River Awach broke its banks.

Kogembo Assistant Chief Hezekiah Owino said the floods began on Monday night. Simbi primary and Simbi secondary schools were flooded.

George Orimba, a local resident said, “At Nyapuodi beach, four houses fell after heavy rains. Our roads are impassable.”

Many families were displaced In Kobala sub-location after their houses were overwhelmed by floods. 
   
River Kuja in Ndhiwa sub-county broke its banks, making floods affect hundreds of families. 

John Odiembo, a resident of Ndhiwa said, “We appeal to the government to intervene and rescue us.”

Male convict who tested positive for COVID-19 dies at a police cell in Migori

A male convict who recently tested positive for COVID-19 died at a police cell in Kuria West, Migori County, on Monday.

According to a police report, the 32-year-old who was identified as Samwel Marwa tested positive for the disease and has been under the care of medical officers while in the police cell as he was 
sentenced on April 1, 2021. 

The convict was isolated in a police cell because he could not to be taken to serve his sentence at the Migori GK Prison, the Kuria West sub-county Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo said. 

Kimaiyo added that the late Marwa was stable in the police cell until Sunday at around 2.22pm when he collapsed and became unconscious with blood-stained foam coming from his mouth. 

The police officers alerted the medical officers who handled the convict and left him to rest in the cell after his condition slightly stabilized.

Unfortunately, he was found dead on Monday morning at around 7am by the medical officer who had gone to do the regular checkup in the cell.

Suspected ivory trafficker arrested in Migori

A 40-year-old suspected smuggler of elephant tusks has been arrested and detained at Migori police cell after he was found with trophies worth street value of Sh5.4 million.

 The suspect was arrested by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers drawn from Narok and Migori counties who were acting on a tip-off from a member of the public.

 According to Migori County Police Commander Manase Musyoka, the trophies weighing 54 kilograms were packed in sacks.

''By the effort of members of the public together with gallant officers from Langata KWS and Migori Kilgoris KWS team managed to net the tusks,” said Musyoka.

The suspect is said to have packed the ivories inside a charcoal sack as he moved from Narok to Migori when the officers managed to intercept him

Lwala health facility closed over Covid-19 cases

The management of Lwala Community Hospital in Rongo, Migori county suspended outpatient services at the facility after 10 medical officers tested positive for Covid-19.

"Some services such as maternity care are still being offered under strict Covid-19 guidelines," the management's letter stated.

Migori county Chief officer public health Fidel Majiwa confirmed the partial closure of the facility.

Migori MCAs elect new assembly deputy speaker

The Migori County Assembly on Tuesday elected a substantive deputy speaker to replace Mr George Omamba who was barred from the office by the Labour Court.

The session was chaired by assembly speaker Boaz Okoth, where the MCAs voted in Bukira East MCA, Mathews Chacha.

Mr. Chacha, who formerly served as the head of committee chairpersons in the assembly replaced Mr. Omamba whose reinstatement had been set aside by court.

Mr. Omamba withdrew from the race citing "emerging Dynamics" after he tried in vain to reclaim the seat following his reinstatement.

Mr Chacha garnered 41 votes while 11 members abstained from the election. His immediate challenger Hon Leo Ogwada got zero votes.
