Over 2,200 families affected by floods in Migori and Homa Bay

Over 2,200 2,200 families in Migori and Homa Bay counties have been displaced by floods caused by heavy rains in the areas. 

On Monday, some 300 homes were submerged at Kakelo Kakoth location in Migori County, forcing locals to move to safer grounds.

The floods affected 60 households in Lower Karapolo and 99 households in 
West Kanyuor location. 

Lower Central Kadem Chief Philip Orwa said that areas around Kuja River such as Lwanda and Kuja were also flooded.

It was quite a challenge for Nyor Primary School teachers from Lwanda who had to wade through knee-high waters to get to the school. Young pupils skipped school for fear of being carried away by floods.

According to the head teacher of the school Elisha Ondiek, pupils from Kuja area faced great difficulty getting to school.

The flooded schools included Kabuto Primary School, Nyora Primary School, Angugo Primary School and Molly Secondary School. 

In the last three days, heavy rains in Homa Bay County displaced hundreds of families in Rachuonyo North. 

Over 100 households were displaced in Kogembo sub-location in Rachuonyo North sub-county by 
floods that occurred after River Awach broke its banks.

Kogembo Assistant Chief Hezekiah Owino said the floods began on Monday night. Simbi primary and Simbi secondary schools were flooded.

George Orimba, a local resident said, “At Nyapuodi beach, four houses fell after heavy rains. Our roads are impassable.”

Many families were displaced In Kobala sub-location after their houses were overwhelmed by floods. 
   
River Kuja in Ndhiwa sub-county broke its banks, making floods affect hundreds of families. 

John Odiembo, a resident of Ndhiwa said, “We appeal to the government to intervene and rescue us.”
