Kananu to be sworn-in as Nairobi Governor on Tuesday

Acting Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu Mwenda is set to be sworn in as the City county chief on Tuesday, November 16, at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre (KICC).

According to a Gazette Notice dated 15 November 2021, Jairus Musumba, the chairman of the committee on Assumption of Office of the County Governor, indicated that Kananu will be sworn in at the KICC COMESA grounds from 10am.

"Pursuant to sections 14 and 16 of the assumption of the office of governor act 2019 and in accordance with the provisions of Article 74 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, it is notified for information of the general public that the swearing-in ceremony of Ms. Ann Kananu Mwenda as the Governor of Nairobi City County, shall take place on Tuesday 16th November 2021 at the Kenyatta International Convention Center COMESA Grounds, starting 10:00 am.”read the Gazette notice in part.

Her swearing-in comes a week after the Supreme court dismissed an appeal by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko seeking to stop Kananu from taking oath of office.

In it's ruling the Supreme Court found that the appeal by Mr. Sonko lacked merit  “The court, we conclude lacks jurisdiction to entertain the application,”

The judges noted that with the absence of a judgment of the appellate court the application by Sonko is premature and does not meet the threshold of the Constitution.

Sonko wanted the apex court to halt the swearing-in of Kananu as Nairobi Governor until it appeal is heard and determined.

Upon her swearing -in, Kananu will become the third Governor and the first female Nairobi Governor.
