An Iten Court has allowed police to hold Ibrahim Rotich , the prime suspect in the murder of international runner Agnes Tirop for 20 days pending investigations into the murder.
Rotich who allegedly murdered the 2015 World cross country champion on Wednesday last week was on Monday arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Charles Kutwa
Earlier, police and private security officials were forced to guard the court premises against locals who were threatening to storm the court to have a glimpse at the suspect.
The suspect will be detained in Eldoret Central Police Station.
The magistrate further directed that the suspect be taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for mental assessment to determine whether he is fit to stand trial and the case be heard in the High Court in Eldoret
"Since this is a matter revolving around murder case, I do direct that it be mentioned at Eldoret High Court on 9th November for further directions." the Magistrate
Ibrahim was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa as he was trying to flee the country, according to the police.
The lifeless body of the athlete was found with stab wounds at her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
