Tokyo Olympics: Kenyan trio in men's 1500m through to semis

The Kenyan trio in the men’s 1500m qualified from the heats thereby making it to the semifinals. 

Timothy Cheruiyot finished second with a time record of 3:36.04

Ismael Debjani of Belgium was the winner with a time record of 3:36.00 while the reigning world champion and Australian Oliver Hoare came in third with 3:36.09.

Abel Kipsang finished Heat Two first with a time record of 3:40:68 while Charles Simotwo clocked 3:37.26 in Heat Three thereby finishing tenth. 

The defending champion, American Matthew Centrowitz, came in second with a time of 3:41.12 after Kipsang. 

However, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali who won gold in the Olympic men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase on Monday night failed to finish his heat.

Cheruiyot, who was a late addition to the Kenyan team won gold.

On Thursday and Saturday will be the semifinals and finals respectively. 

Hellen Syombua did not make it to the semifinals as she finished 5th in the women’s 400m by clocking 52.70 seconds. 

The Kenyan trio of Nicholas Kimeli, Daniel Simiu and Samuel Chebole will be in action in the men’s 5000m heats.
