Kenya's Titus Ekiru on Sunday set a new course record time as he won and defended his Milano Marathon title in Italy in a time of 2:02:57
Ekiru, the reigning Honolulu marathon champion reduced two minutes from his 2019 record of 2:04:46.
His new record now means he is the fifth-fastest marathoner of all time.
"From the 20km mark, I was feeling good and I said I would push a bit till the 30km mark. We tried to push with my friend Rueben and at the 35km mark, I decided to increase the pace a bit to see if I can get a good time, "
“I feel happy with the time and now I want to go and rest then make a strategy with my coach again. I believe I can even run 2:01.”Ekiru who is also the African Game half marathon champion stated.
Compatriots Reuben Kiprop came in second in a time of 2:03:55 while Barnabas Kiptum came third after clocking 2:04:17.
Meanwhile Ethiopia's Hiwot Gebrekida won the women's race in a new course record time of 2:19:35.
Rachel Jemutai of Kenya came second after clocking 2:22:50 while Bahrain's Eunice Chebichi sealed the podium in 2:23:01
This year's race had at least 120 participants with a number of the athletes using the marathon to attain the Tokyo Olympics Games qualification slot.
