Kenya detect cases of Indian COVID-19 variant

The Ministry of Health has announced that it has detected cases of the Indian COVID-19 variant.

Health Ministry's acting Director-General Dr Patrick Amoth said the cases were detected in five people who work in a fertilizer plant in Kisumu.

"This variant (from India) has been detected in Kenya, and due to global connectivity, it was just a question of time, ”Said Dr Amoth.

The five are said to have jetted in the country from the Asian Country, days before the fourteen-day travel ban announced by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe in a bid to curb the spread of the virus came into effect.

Dr Amoth said the ministry together with the County Government of Kisumu have kicked off contact tracing.
