Southampton cruise over Newscastle to top league


Southampton beat Newcastle United 2-0 to go top of PL table for the first time.

Theo Walcott teed up Che Adams in the 7th minute to give The Saints the lead at St Marys Stadium.

Stuart Armstrong scored the second goal in the 82nd minute with a left footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner.

Southampton are level points with Liverpool after eight games and Newcastle remain 11th with 11 points.

Stuart Armstrong claimed Southampton's 1,000th Premier League goal on 82 minutes with a powerful shot before goalkeeper Alex McCarthy denied Jamal Lewis with a sensational save inside the final five minutes.

In other grounds, Brighton battled out to a goalless draw with Burnley. Brighton stays 16th, with six points, while Burnley remains 19th with two.
