There was a stand off at the Kenya School of Government in Mombasa after supporters of Mike Sonko went on protest after it emerged that the electoral commission had denied him clearance to contest for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.
Police were forced to lob teargas as the supporters started to chant and mill around the hall threatening to storm in where the IEBC officials were conducting clearance.
Swalhah Yusuf, the returning officer while declining to clear Sonko said she had not received official communication from the High Court to clear Wiper Party gubernatorial aspirant.
She said the commission was not aware that Mr Sonko has an active case at Supreme Court and it needs the same communication in order to clear him.
Mr Sonko had been accompanied by his running mate and Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo and Wiper Chairman Chirau Ali Makwere.
