Raila defends Keroche breweries, urges KRA to defer levies

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga has hit out at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for shutting down Keroche Breweries over tax arrears saying the firm should be given more time to clear their debt.

Speaking during a meeting with businessmen in Murang’a, Raila said the move by the tax man will not only affect the cost of doing business in Kenya but also negatively impact on investments further noting that the closure will also affect many jobs.

"That's why we tell them let Keroche go, don't kill Keroche," he said.

"If they are not able to pay today, spread it out. They a debt and they are Kenyans where will they run to? If they cannot pay help them to continue with business so they can pay tomorrow. That is how we do business. Don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg."

“Widen the net and allow people to pay. But don’t close the business because someone has defaulted in paying taxes. If you do that, you are not only killing the investors, but the employee,” he added

Raila's appeal comes days after the taxman closed down the Naivasha-based firm accusing it of defaulting on an agreed repayment plan.
