JKIA runway temporarily closed, flights diverted to Mombasa and Dar es Salaam

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s (JKIA) runway has temporarily been closed after an aircraft developed a mechanical hitch on Wednesday evening.

The  mechanical fault left the aircraft stranded on the landing strip, thereby preventing inbound flights from landing  and outbound off from taking off.

All inbound flights to the JKIA have since been redirected to Mombasa and Dar es Salam while outbound flights are currently on hold.

“Jambo this is to confirm that the runway at JKIA is temporarily closed as crews respond to safely remove disabled aircraft. Takeoffs and landings are on hold. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airline for flight status updates,” the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said in a statement.

Efforts to tow the plane from the runway using forklifts have commenced.
