Anne Kananu sworn in as Nairobi Governor

Anne Kananu Mwenda has been sworn in as the new Nairobi City County boss.

Kananu was sworn in on Tuesday at the Kenyatta International Convention Center( KICC) Comesa grounds by Justice Lilian Mutendi.

Kananu has been serving in an acting capacity since the ouster of Mike Sonko in December 2020.

"I have sworn to truly and diligently serve the county of Nairobi without fear. I commit to working for and with all of you,” she stated during her swearing-in.

Last week, the Supreme Court okayed her swearing-in after throwing out an appeal by former Governor Mike Sonko who was seeking to stop the swearing-in until his appeal is heard and determined with the apex court citing lack of jurisdiction.

Council of Governor Chair Martin Wambora and Nairobi Metropolitan Service ( NMS)boss Maj Mohamed Badi were in attendance during the swearing-in ceremony.

Kananu becomes the third city boss and the fourth Woman Governor after Governors ; Charity Ngilu( Kitui), Ann Waiguru( Kirinyaga), and the late Joyce Laboso( Bomet).

“I am privileged to join Governor Charity Ngilu and Governor Anne Waiguru as the country’s first female governors. Today marks yet another milestone for women and the girls in Kenya,” said Kananu, calling on women to come forth and take up leadership positions.
