Kenyan marathoner Margaret Chelimo on Sunday broke the 10km record during an event in Valencia, Spain.
The record set by her compatriot Agnes Tirop's last month was 30:01. However, Chelimo slashed it by clocking 29:50.
Second was Norah Jeruto with a timing of 30:07 while Sandrafelis Tuei came in third with 30:44, followed by Betti Chepkemoi with 31:07 and Rosemary Wanjiru came in fifth with 31:09.
Chelimo said she did not expect a world record time even though she was prepared to run well.
“I had planned to run a good race because I had prepared well and I’m just happy that I managed a world record time. This is huge for me and it has come at the moment we are preparing for the next season,” said the long distance runner who trains at 2Running Club in Kapsabet.
Chelimo bagged silver in the 5,000m during the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, in 2019. She however missed a chance to represent the country during the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
