Sakaja petitions Senate to probe police killings in Nairobi

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has  protested what he described as the " arbitrarily killings of innocent Boda Boda riders by police in the city,"

Sakaja remarks followed an incident where a rider was shot dead by police along Kirinyaga road.

The Senator also wants the Senate Justice Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee ( JLAC) led by Senator Okong'o Omogeni to initiate an inquiry and establish the circumstances that led to the death of the rider.

"50 per cent of the people killed  have been in my county and there are other many cases where these riders have been harassed and made to suffer in the city. I hope that this can be resolved speedily,” he said.

Sakaja further wants the House Team to among other issues outline action taken by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai against officers who have been accused of perpetrating the said offences.

“The committee should explain why cases of extrajudicial killings have continued despite the public outcry and what strategies have been put in place by the Inspector General to ensure humane, professional and responsible policing,” he said.

The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched investigations to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of the boda boda  operator who was shot dead for allegedly refusing to bribe the police.
