Zambia's opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has won the August 12 presidential election defeating incumbent President Edgar Lungu.
Hichilema garnered 2,810,752 votes against Lungu's 1,814, 201 thus surpassing the 50 plus one requirement.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu declared the results on Monday with only one out 156 polling centers results yet to trickle in.
"I therefore declare that Hichilema to be president of Zambia," electoral commission chairman, Esau Chulu, said in a packed results center in the capital Lusaka.
The 59-year-old opposition leader election comes at the backdrop of a staggering economy.
This is the sixth time, Hichilema has run for the top seat.
