Zambia's outgoing President Edgar Lungu has conceded defeat in the August 12 Presidential elections that opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema won.
The Patriot Front Candidate who had earlier protested over the election outcome termini it ' not free and fair' thanked his supporters and called on Zambians to exercise calm promising to facilitate swift transfer of power.
“I will comply with the Constitution’s provision for a peaceful transfer of power. I wish to congratulate my brother, Hakainde Hichilema, on being elected the 7th President of Zambia,” Mr Lungu said in a live broadcast on state radio and television
Earlier, the President-Elect Hichilema promised to run an inclusive government while thanking youths for turning out in a large number and supporting his bid.
He also condemned the electoral violence calling on the country's police to decisively deal with any form of criminality.
Zambia's Electoral Commission Chairperson Esau Chulu declared the opposition candidate the winner of the election after he garnered 2,810,757 votes against Mr. Lungu's 1,814,201.
