The Nairobi County government has assented into law a raft of new regulations that will criminalize unhygienic behaviors in the city.
The new regulation are contained in the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill of 2021 which was on Monday signed into law by Acting Nairobi County Governor Anne Mwenda.
Among the regulations initiated include a ban on spitting in public spaces, blowing one nose without a handkerchief or a tissue, and urinating in undesignated areas.
The new law also prohibits the discharge of sewer or effluent into the street or water channel.
Playing of loud music by motorists and riding on footpaths by Boda Boda operators have also been prohibited.
The bill has also prohibited residents from allowing trees and hedges in their homes or work places from to block streets or footpaths.
Acting Nairobi Governor Anne Mwenda Kananu has urged city residents to be conversant with the new regulations to avoid run-ins with the law enforcement officers.
"Nairobi is the face of Kenya. We all need a clean and hygienic environment to live and work in.”
The bill was initiated by Riruta Ward MCA Kariuki Kiribi.
