Athletics Kenya is seeking to have Rhonex Kipruto replace Geoffrey Kamworor in Kenya's 10,000 m team for the Olympics.
Kamworor was on Thursday ruled out of the Olympics due to an ankle injury.
Kipruto, the 2019 World 10,000 m Bronze medalist withdrew from the national trials with five laps to go.
However, AK have identified him as the replacement for Kamworor, the 2019 New York Marathon winner and former world half-marathon record holder.
"We are working with World Athletics to see whether we can have him replace Kamworor. We have sent all the necessary documentation because he had attained the qualification time. We have also sent documents to the AIU (Athletics Integrity Unit) to ensure he has passed the strict rules,” Team Kenya General Manager Barnaba Korir told a local news outlet.
“We are in constant communication so hopefully it should be sorted out soon. We want him to travel to Japan as soon as possible,” he added.
The other athletes competing for the 10,000 meters including Rodgers Kwemoi and Weldon Kipkirui departed from the country on Friday evening aboard Qatar Airways, the duo are expected to be cleared into the athlete's village on Saturday.
