Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's founding President has died at a military hospital in the country's capital Lusaka where he was receiving treatment for pneumonia, his son Kambarage said on Thursday.
He was 97 years old.
Kaunda ruled the Southern African nation from 1964 when the country won its independence from Britain until 1991.
" I am sad to inform you that we have lost Mzee let's pray for him," Kambarage said on the late President's Facebook page.
The former President had fallen ill and was admitted to the Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka earlier in the week.
Kaunda will be remembered for his role as one of Africa's most committed activist against HIV/AIDS.
