The government has reviewed the coronavirus containment measures in 13 counties within the Lake Basin region following a surge in Covid-19 infections in the areas.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said that the dusk to dawn curfew shall now begin at 7 pm and end at 4 am in the counties of Siaya, Homa Bay, Nyamira, Kakamega, Kericho, Bomet, Bungoma , Trans Nzoia, Busia, Vihiga, Kisumu, Migori and Kisii.
The new measures take effect from Friday, June 18th until further notice.
The CS stated that the 13 counties have been declared Covid-19 hotspot zone after recording a positivity rate of 21 per cent against the national average of 9%
"Over the last 14 days infections in the Counties of Busia, Vihiga, Kisii, Nyamira, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kericho, Bomet, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa-Bay and Migori constituted 60% of the national caseload,” noted the CS.
Movement in and out of the restricted region will remain restricted except for emergency and essential purposes.
"No movement Except for essential and emergency services, movement between the hotspot Zone and the rest of the country is strongly discouraged,” reads the statement.
All forms of physical gatherings including at places of worship have been suspended for 30 days.
Weekly non-food and livestock markets have also been suspended for 30 days.
According to the Ministry of Health, the spike in the infection have been triggered by the proximity to neighbouring Uganda that has recent registered a surge in Covid-19 infections.
However, the containment measures of the rest of the country remain unchanged.
