The body of a female third-year student at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has been discovered outside her house in Kefinco, in the outskirts of Kakamega town.
According to Kakamega township assistant chief Isaac Ayumba investigations into the matter are underway.
Reports indicate that before being killed by unknown assailants, the student was sexually assaulted.
Witnesses said that the deceased was last seen on Tuesday.
Students at the university have pointed out that the incident is among many that add up to the increasing insecurity in the region.
They took to the streets on Wednesday carrying placards and twigs demand an investigation into the matter and the arrest of the assailants.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Kakamega County Refferal Hospital Mortuary.
