Zidane steps down as Real Madrid manager

Zinedine Zidane has resigned as Real Madrid head coach with immediate effect, the Spanish club said on Thursday.

"It is now time to respect his decision and show our appreciation for his professionalism, dedication and passion throughout all these years, and for what he represents as his figure for Real Madrid,” the club said in a statement.

“Zidane is one of Real Madrid’s great icons and his legacy extends beyond what he has achieved as a coach and player at our club. He is aware that he has a place in the hearts of the Real Madrid fans and that he will always have a home at Real Madrid.”

The Frenchman's exit comes days after the club lost the La Liga title to Atletico Madrid.

In his term as the manager, Real Madrid won the Champions League title thrice and the La Liga title twice but finished this season trophyless.

This season, the club was second in the La Liga league two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

In the champions league, Real Madrid was knocked out by the Blues in the semi finals.

Real Madrid are yet to announce a new manager.

This was Zidane second stint at the club, in January 2016 he was first appointed the club's manager until May 2018. He was again handed the post in March 2019.
