South Africa's Health Ministry has said that it has detected four cases of a new coronavirus variant that emerged in India.
In a statement, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize also said that they had also detected 11 cases of variant B.1.1.7 first found in the UK.
"The four cases of B.1.617.2 (Indian variant of coronavirus) have been detected in Gauteng (2) and KwaZulu-Natal (2) and all have a history of a recent arrival from India. All cases have been isolated and managed according to the national COVID-19 case management guidelines and contact tracing has been performed to limit the spread of this variant, ”said Zweli Mkhize
The Covid-19 variant from India that has been linked to the surge in infections and fatalities in the Asian country has also been detected in Kenya and Uganda.
South Africa is Africa's worst-hit country by the pandemic in terms of infections and fatalities.
As of Saturday, the Southern Africa nation had recorded over 1.59 million infections and 54,687 fatalities.
