The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has ordered investigations after a video of a female officer lamenting over unfair treatment and harassment went viral on social media on Saturday.
In a tweet from the National Police Service official handle, the IG said the officer who is attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa had complained against a merchant and was subjected to an inquiry by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation officers resulting in a departmental action.
" I have directed the Gender and Children Directorate to independently investigate the matter and give a report within 7 days,” he said on Twitter.
In the video, the officer asks the IG to let her resign even if she would lose some of her work benefits as she can no longer tolerate working as a police officer.
“Mimi naomba nipewe tu nafasi niende, nitoke, niresign peacefully…. Nimeandika several resignation letters, attached to hospital letter… Hazifiki. Letters hazifiki kwa Inspector General. Sasa, hatuwezi kuwa tunateseka. Wengine wanaenda kabla waue ama they commit suicide. Mimi siwezi commit suicide. Ntaenda nje na ntafanya kazi vizuri sana kama raia wengine,” she says in the now-viral video.
She further accused the office of Internal Affairs of failing to address the plight of police officers instead demanding for bribes before acting on a matter and even urged the President to disband the office.
