,Lawrence Warunge, a worker at Karura area in Kiambaa, Kiambu County and a prime suspect the murder of his four family members, has been charged with five counts of murder but he has pleaded not guilty.
Warunge was charged with killing his father Nicholas Warunge, mother Anne Warunge, brother Christian Njenga, nephew Maxwell Njenga and construction worker James Kinyanjui on the night of January 5-6, 2021.
However, he denied the charges in a virtual court session before Lady justice Mary Kasango.
There will be a pre-trial hearing scheduled for May 11, 2021 and the court's directive was that the 22-year-old suspect be remanded at Nairobi Industrial Area Prison until then.
Since he was arrested in January, Warunge has been in police custody as it was being determined whether that he was mentally stable and fit to stand trial.
On the other hand, Warunge’s girlfriend Sarah Muthoni is expected to be a State witness in the case. Previously, she had been presented before court as the second accused.
On January 26, 2021, the court ruled that Lawrence was unfit to stand trial after a psychiatric report was presented at the Kiambu law court.
He told police officers that ‘Killing Eve’, a British dark thriller inspired him to commit the cold-blooded murders.
According to Warunge, the four members of his nuclear family were talking ill of him behind his back and that pushed him to eliminate them.
Reportedly, he was also planning to kill his two sisters but fortunately they are still alive.
