Candidates performed commendably in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE) 2020 despite the challenging period they had to endure due to COVID-19 disruptions, as per the results on Thursday.
A total of 1,191,616 candidates registered for the exam. However, due to different circumstances, 12,424 candidates did not sit for the exams.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha who announced the results, no candidate would miss a place in secondary school.
889,011 pupils scored below 300 out of 500 marks while 8,091 candidates who scored over 400 marks with the top candidate attaining 433 marks.
282,090 pupils attained between 300 — 399 marks, 589,027 scored between 200 — 299, 299,677 scored between 100 — 199 while 307 others scored between 1 — 99 marks.
There was an improvement in performance in English Composition, Kiswahili Lugha, Kenyan Sign Language Objective, Mathematics and Religious Education when compared to 2019, Prof. Magoha said.
However, English Language, Kiswahili Insha, Kenyan Sign Language Composition, Science and Social Studies recorded a drop in performance.
The performance of female candidates was slightly better than that of their male counterparts in English, Kiswahili and Kenyan Sign Language.
In Mathematics, Science and Social Studies and Religious Education, male candidates performed slightly better than their female counterparts.
In 2020, there were 2,675 candidates with Special Needs and the number was slightly higher than 2019's 2,407 candidates with Special Needs. The top performing pupil as per the 2020 results scored 420 marks.
Special Needs candidates who scored 400 marks are Brandon Otundo — Set Green Hill Academy (420), Kibet Gipson Ndiema – Nalondo C.B.M (411), Kioko Joseph Kyalo – Kangundo D.E.B (409), Isabwa Blessings Monicah – Mukumu Girls (409), Naomi Yvonne Omare — St lwanga Njoro Catholic (409), Joseph Muia Rita – Young Achievers School (407), Ifrah Mahamud Shuriye — Young Muslim Academy (405), Fidel Odera Ouma – Kari D.E.B (402) and Kaitah Edgar Wilson – Lukhuna (400).
The Education CS pointed out that there were five cases of impersonation during the examination process while seven candidates were found in possession of pre-prepared notes in examination rooms.
He said, “In the administration of the 2020 KCPE Examinations, the Government sustained its robust security arrangements through the Multi-Sectoral Examinations Monitoring Team. These measures ensured that cases of irregularities during the sitting of the examinations, and during the marking process, were either stamped out or nipped in the bud before they could happen.”
