Liverpool legend Ian St John passes away at age 82

Liverpool legend Ian St John passed away aged 82 years on the evening of Monday March 1, 2021 following a long illness.

His family issued a statement saying, "It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that after a long illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather.

“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times. The family would be grateful for privacy at this extremely sad time,” the statement added.

The Reds legend made 425 appearances for the Anfield giants between 1961 and 1971, scoring 118 goals.

He secured Liverpool's first ever FA Cup triumph against Leeds in 1965 by plundering one of the most iconic goals in the team’s history as he netted the winner in extra time.

St John was a key part of the side under Bill Shankly which won league titles in 1964 and 1966.

In his first season on Merseyside after joining for a then club-record fee of £37,500 from Motherwell, St John helped the Reds move to the first division.

After his retirement, he had a successful career as a pundit. St John partnered with fellow ex-pro Jimmy Greaves on their popular Saint and Greavsie programme.

He played for Hellenic in South Africa after leaving Liverpool and was further involved in English football with Coventry and Tranmere.

After his retirement from playing in 1973, St John managed Motherwell and Portsmouth.

He was an assistant manager at Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry.
