COVID millionares 'whistleblower' among three arrested for demanding Sh 2M bribe

COVID millionaires 'whistleblower 'Godwins Agutu is among three suspects arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)  detectives for  impersonating EACC and KRA officers and demanding a  Ksh. 2M bribe.

Agutu who is the Network Action Against Corrutption Directors featured in an expose by NTV alleging widespread misuse of COVID-19 funds and medical equipment donated by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma .

 Agutu was arrested alongside  Alex Mutua Mutuku and Ken Gichovi  Kimathi on Wednesday evening .


They are accussed of abducting the Director of Hi - tech Enterprise while claiming to be a multi- agency team from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) and Kenya Revenue Authority ( KRA).

The suspects bribed the director asking him to stop pursuing an alleged tax evasion case involving the victim.


DCI boss George Kinoti said that the three were in the company of three KRA officers namely Houdouvia Njoroge, Harrison Ochar and Brian Kimemia who managed to escape.

They used two Prados Registration numbers GKB 070 B and KCV 280Q and stormed the victim's office within Nairobi on September 26, 2020, after which they took his laptop and left


The suspects appeared again on September 29,2020, demanding a Sh 2 M bribe and when the victim failed to raise the amount they forced him into a GK vehicle and drove off to Lutheran House along Nyerere road.


The DCI boss said the victim was forced to contact his family to raise the money  but only managed to raise Sh 500,000

The suspects then escorted the victim to his house in Westlands to pick the cash.


" Investigations were launched where the three suspects were nabbed at the said Lutheran House, further establishing that the registration number of GKB 070B belonged to a Land Rover Discovery attached to the judiciary, " said Kinoti.
