James Gesami approved as Nyamira County Deputy Governor

Former West Mugirango Member of Parliament James Gesami has finally been approved as Nyamira Deputy Governor nominee after he re-submitted his papers to the county assembly.


The county assembly unanimously approved Gesami's nomination after Majority Leader Duke Masira presented the report of the Committee on Appointment on the vetting of the Deputy Governor nominee.


"The County Assembly, in its Special Sitting of Monday, 9th August 2021 has considered and approved the Report of the Committee on Appointments on the Vetting of Dr. James Ondicho Gesami Nominee for Deputy Governor – County Government of Nyamira,” read a letter from Speaker Moffat Teya to Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo.


According to the report tabled at the assembly, Gesami had submitted all the required documents including a clearance from the CRB, HELB, EACC as well as a certificate of Good Conduct.


Governor Amos Nyaribo had on May 28th re-submitted Gesami's name as his deputy after the assembly had previously rejected his nomination on grounds that he failed to present crucial documents.

Court bars vetting of Nyamira Deputy Governor James Gesami

The vetting of Nyamira Deputy Governor Dr James Gesami which was set for Friday has been halted after a court issued conservatory orders barring the process.


The High Court in Nyamira issued the orders to stop the County Assembly from vetting Dr Gesami until a case filed by a resident Patrick Atambo is heard and determined.

" It is hereby ordered that interim conservatory order be and is hereby issued staying the process of nomination and or processing a nominee to the office of a Deputy Governor, County Government of Nyamira pending the hearing and determination of the application,” read the order.



The case has been slated for June 8, 2021.

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo on Tuesday, last week re-submitted the name of the former West Mugirango MP for vetting for the position of Deputy Governor.


In January, 21 out of 36 MCAs previously rejected the nomination of Dr Gesami citing that he failed to submit crucial documents like HELB, CRB and EACC certificates.

65-year-old man arrested for allegedly killing his 95-year-old mother

A 65-year-old man, James Mong'are Orucho, in Nyamira County has been arrested for allegedly killing his 95-year old mother, Catherine Moraa. 

According to County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the man is suspected to have strangled the mother for reasons that hasn't established .

He said the woman was found in her bed at around 6 am on Sunday with visible scars on her body.

Nyamira North sub-county police Commander Patrick Ngeiywa said, "Police officers from Nyamira North visited the scene and established that the deceased had bruises on her face and blood was oozing from her nose." 

"Our investigations are still going on before we make known the facts surrounding the suspected murder. For now, we shall have to wait until investigations are concluded," he added saying that the motive behind the suspected murder could not be confirmed. 

According to him, the crime could have been committed Saturday night.

Reportedly, some relatives to the woman have already been summoned to shed light on the murder.

KDF officers involved in road crash airlifted to Nairobi

Nine KDF soldiers involved in a road crash near Bonyunyu area along Nyamira-Miruka road on Saturday morning have been airlifted to Nairobi.


Nyamira county commissioner Amos Mariba confirmed the incident, saying the nine service personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces were from a funeral in the county. 

According to Mariba, the personnel were in a bus 
headed back to Nairobi when the accident occurred.

He added that the the KDF bus driver Daniel Munyi from the DOD headquarters lost control after the brakes failed and the bus hit a pavement, rolling off the road.

The three KDF soldiers and three servicemen sustained serious head injuries and leg fractures while three civilians who were riding in the same bus sustained minor injuries.

The officers received treatment at the Nyamira County Refferal Hospital and were later airlifted by a KDF helicopter to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

The three civilians were transferred to Kisii referral hospital.

Student arrested after attempting to hack deputy principal in Nyamira

A Form Two student from Mokwerero Secondary School, Nyamira County has been arrested after allegedly attempting to hack his deputy principal on Wednesday.

The student was arrested in possession of a machete and a sharpening file.

The 18- year-old student had rushed to the deputy principal's office with an intention to kill him before he was seized by other teachers as well as members of the support staff.

According to the school principal, the police have taken up the matter and would unveil more details about the incident.

“The police are currently investigating the matter and the student has been arrested, ”the area administration said 

This follows a similar incident in which a student from Kisii High School stabbed two teachers who wanted to punish him.

Ex- MP appointed Nyamira Deputy Governor

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has nominated James Ondicho Gesami as his deputy governor.

Gesami a trained doctor is a former MP for West Mugirango Constituency.

In the 2017 General Election, Gesami unsuccessfully ran for the Nyamira gubernatorial seat.

Governor Nyaribo was sworn-in last week following the death of John Nyagarama in December last year.

Reeves bar manager stabbed over unpaid bill

The manager of Reeves Bar in Nyamira County was stabbed in the neck, left hand and stomach on Friday night over an unpaid bill.

According to reports there was a dispute over payment after an unknown reveller was served with drinks at the bar.

“The reveller was running away in regard to the payment and the manager (Bavon Ogoti Lazarus) decided to follow him down the stairs but in return he became violent and assaulted him then ran away,” the report reads.

Officers from Keroka Police Station visited the scene and established that the manager had sustained serious injuries.

He was rushed to Medistop medical facility and then referred to Christomarian Private Hospital in Kisii where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body has since been moved to Kisii Level Six Hospital awaiting autopsy.

Nyamira Governor Nyaribo sacks all CECs day after taking office

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo ,has sent home all members of the County Executive Committee a day after assuming office.

Nyaribo was sworn in on Tuesday to replace thee late Governor John Nyagarama who died on December 18 aged 74. 

Nyaribo sacked all the Nyamira County’s 10 CECs and asked them to handover immediately.

CECs are appointees of a governor and Nyaribo’s move didn’t come as a surprise as it’s within his right to keep Nyagarama’s team or hire his own.

The new county boss, who served under Nyagarama as Deputy Governor for eight years, is expected to announce the appointment of a Deputy Governor within a period of 14 days from the day he assumed office.

All eyes are now on Nyaribo, who differed with the late Nyagarama on many issues ranging from corruption to appointment of county officials, with residents expecting him to clean up his former boss’ misdoings.

Nyagarama, who passed on at the Nairobi Hospital, was laid to rest on Thursday, December 24.

Amos Nyaribo sworn in as Nyamira Governor

Amos Nyaribo has officially been sworn in as the second Governor of Nyamira County.

Nyaribo was sworn in at Nyamira Primary grounds on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

The newly sworn-in governor was also handed over the instruments of power by the Nyamira County Secretary.

He later signed the Leadership and Integrity Code which was issued to him by a representative from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama's body has been airlifted to his Riamonoti home in Borabu Constituency this morning. 

The body left Lee Funeral Home some minutes past 8am in a Kenya police chopper whoch landed at Riamanoti Primary School shortly after 9am.

The family will hold brief prayers before proceeding to Nyamira Primary school grounds where the funeral service will be held under the leadership of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church where the deceased was an  elder.


Nyagarama will be laid to rest at Tente area in West Mugirango and within the Nyamira Municipality. 

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi will be leading a host of professionals in eulogising the deceased while the Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and his Kisii Counterpart James Ongwae will lead the political class.

Man's body found hanging from a tree in Nyamira

A man's body was found hanging from a tree on Saturday morning in Nyamira County. The incident, which is suspected to be a suicide case , occurred in his farm in Getare. 

According to Getare Assistant Chief Charles Oigoro, children in the area found Mr. Ongaro Ongeri's body dangling from the tree.

Zipporah Bosibori, the widow, said that the late husband did not tell her where he was going when he left the house at 5.am. 

According to her,  Mr. Ongeri did not show any signs of distress or frustration. Zipporah added that the late husband never had issues with anyone.

"He did not show any signs of being stressed up. We ate supper and retired to bed at 9pm. But this morning [Saturday], he left very early and did not say where he was going,” she said.

Death records in Nyamira County show that there is an increase in suicide cases.

Nyamira County Commissioner, Amos Mariba, stated that alcoholics and drug addicts top the list of suicide cases.

Mr. Mariba said, "If there are challenges in life, we need to seek help instead of committing suicide."
