CS Amina Mohammed fires stadium contactor over underperformance

February 02, 2021 0
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has fired the contractor from Wote Stadium in Makueni County due to underperformance.

The Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) made a statement on Tuesday, February 2 indicating the CS's move.

Reportedly, Mohammed visited the construction site which was being run by Mike Muendo's Traphes and Nitram Enterprise Limited and she was unimpressed by the progress.

Labour CS Simon Chelugui and Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti are among the colleagues that accompanied her.

The CS revealed that the Ministry has selected National Youth Service (NYS) to take over the project.

The fired contractor has therefore lost a Ksh350 million deal with the state. It is said that he had missed several deadlines including that of December 2020.

In September 2020, he appealed to have the deadline extended by two months but the Ministry of Sports officials rejected his appeal.

“The issue of timeline extension can’t apply here because you know the pressure we’ve been given and how many times we’ve been here and you have been assuring us that you’ll mobilise your team in order to adhere to the set timelines, but that has not been the case," Muteti stated at the time.

He added, “We’ve even been directed to terminate your contract and re-advertise it but we’ve been patient and so the facility must be handed over to us (Sports Kenya) by the end of the year.”

After the site had stalled in 2017, the contractor signed a return to work agreement with the ministry in June 2020.

Claiming that there was a variation of Ksh12 million due to the restructuring of the site's landscape, the contractor sought for an extension.

Mentally challenged man kills mother and sister in Kibwezi

January 03, 2021 0
A mentally challenged man in Makueni County murdered his 75-year-old  mother and his 35-year-old sister on Sunday morning around 4 am at Metava village in Thange.

A manhunt by police in Kibwezi Sub-County for the man is currently underway.

The 40-year-old man identified as Muoki Nzavi stabbed his mother Esther Nzavi and Wavinya Nzavi several times to death. The sister succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital while mother died instantly.

Thange Assistant Chief Nicholas Mwonga said that the man accesed the room normally and attacked the victims while they were deep asleep.

Mwonga said, “When we visited we found the doors were still intact in good condition, not broken into, raising questions on how the man entered the house. But I think the mother might have opened the door for him, who can deny entry to own son?”

He added that the suspect had already fled the scene by the time the neighbors came to the rescue of the two victims who were lying in a pool of blood in two different rooms. The man left a long knife at the crime scene.

“Neighbors say that they heard the two shout for help but when they rushed to the scene the man had already finished executing his mission and fled to unknown hideouts,” Mwonga added.

According to reports, Muoka has been arrested on several occasions for assaulting the mother and sister but the two victims refused to appear and testify in court when they were invited.

The Assistant Chief said, “This didn’t just happen, they have been assaulted before but when the man gets arrested the two fail to appear in court hence stamping his release by courts for lack of evidence.”

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Makindu sub-county hospital mortuary.

Makueni man innovates beer vending machine

November 08, 2020 0
A 64-year-old Daniel Ndambuki Kituku alias  Bushman has invented  one-of-its kind in Makueni beer vending machine for use in bars and restaurants during the unprecedented COVID-19 times.

Mr. Ndambuki embarked on the ambitious project earlier this year and has so far made and sold six machines to some bar owners within Makueni.

The innovation allows patrons to clean  their own glasses and sanitize before proceeding to the vending machine where they get booze equivalent to the money spent.

The innovator says the machine takes him two weeks to assemble and retails for Ksh.2,000 provided the client provides the materials.

Mr Ndambuki believes his innovation which eliminates the need for customer-bar-tender mingling is the key to solving the coronavirus conundrum.

Since customers pay at the machine, they can leave bars  at their discretion without contact with the bar attendants
