Gov't to impose dusk to dawn curfew in Kerio Valley

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i now says a 30-day dusk-to-dawn curfew will be imposed in Elgeyo Marakwet County to help law enforcement agencies carry out a security operation aimed at flushing out bandits from the area.

Speaking at the Administration Police Training College in Embakasi on Friday after meeting top security officials , CS Matiang'i said the curfew will be imposed in the troubled areas of Kerio Valley once the National Security Council ratifies the exercise.

CS Matian'gi also revealed that a disarmament exercise would be conducted in the area in line with the said curfew.

“We are beginning to draw two critical exercises that we want to do: reorganizing deployment in that area and declaration of a curfew subject to clearance by the National Security Council so that we can have an intensive operation similar to the one we launched in Marsabit,” he said.

The announcement comes days after the brutal killing of three school-going children in Tot, Endo Ward, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

“We have received security reports from each of the eight Regional Commissioners and Police Commanders. We are now finalizing our SOPs so that we are ready to support the IEBC in August. In two of our regions, we have begun doing simulations, and the rest will follow suit next week,” said the CS.
