Former police spokesperson Charles Owino has backed out of the race for Siaya County governor where he was set to deputise former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo during the August 9th polls.
According to reports, Owino is set to make a comeback to the National Police Service (NPS) with conflicting sources claiming that he did not officially resign to pursue an elective seat.
Subsequently Gumbo has picked UDM's Secretary General David Ohito as his new running mate after the electoral body had given a 48-hour deadline for Owino’s replacement to be named.
Owino had initially wanted to seek out Siaya’s top seat himself ODM party, before decamping to UDM and merging forces with Gumbo.
While exiting ODM, Owino accused the Raila-Odinga party of bypassing him and awarding a direct ticket to Senator James Orengo despite having already paid nomination fees at the time.
Gumbo and Owino were set to face off with Senator Orengo, who together with his running mate and former gubernatorial aspirant William Oduol are seeking to succeed Governor Cornel Rasanga who is serving his second and final term.
