Tokyo Marathon:Eliud Kipchoge, Brigid Kosgei break course records

Marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge has smashed the Tokyo Marathon course record .

Kipchoge kicked off his quest to win all the six World Marathon Majors (WMM) with a debut at the Marathon ,where he was making his return to the Japanese capital barely seven months after bagging his second Olympic title.

Kipchoge clocked 2:02:40 to break record of 2:03:58 set by compatriot Wilson Kipsang in 2017.

Amos Kipruto, the world bronze medallist, settled for second in a new personal best of 2:03:13 where he erased 17 seconds off his previous mark. Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia placed third.

The New York City Marathon and Boston Marathon are the only remaining races at the WMM series that Kipchoge is yet to compete in.

“I am so proud to win in the streets of Tokyo, where the people have running in their hearts and minds. It’s great to now have won 4 out of the 6 Abbott World Marathon Major races. Finally, I want to say I want this world to unite. My win today is to bring positivity in this world,” Kipchoge said after his win.


In the woman's race Kenyan Brigid Kosgei ran the fastest women’s marathon ever in Tokyo when she clocked a remarkable 2:16:02 and smashing the previous course record of 2:17:45 held by Kenyan born Kenya-born Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel. 

The 2019 Berlin Marathon champion Ashete Bekere and the reigning Berlin Marathon champion Gotyom Gebreslase finished second and third respectively while Kenyan Angela Tanui was fourth at 2:18:42.
