Guinea ex-President Conde travels to UAE for medical check-up

Ousted Guinean President Alpha Conde has left the West African nation for a medical check-up in the United Arab Emirates, the country's junta has confirmed.

The National Rally and Development Committee (CNRD), which ousted Conde in September last year, said the former president left the country on Tueaday.

Conde was ousted in September 2021 by the Junta following months of mass protest in the country that began following a constitutional change that allowed him to seek a third presidential term.

He then won the elections which the opposition parties boycotted terming it a sham.

The September coup that was spearhead by Colonel Mamady Doumboaya has been condemned by the African Union and the regional Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Conde, 83, who had been in power since for a decade, was detained by the junta  after his ouster.
