Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and presidential hopeful Raila Odinga has blamed Deputy President William Ruto for the fracas in Kondele on Wednesday during DP Ruto's tour in Kisumu.
Raila was speaking to Mbaitu FM on Thursday morning when he accused the DP of provoking the youth in his remarks during a roadside rally.
He said, “If you yourself utter a speech that makes the crowd angry, this may make some people react and take action in unsavoury ways.I however don’t see a problem here since we have come from a different level of democracy to another. Democracy is continuing to thrive in our country.”
On Wednesday, Ruto’s convoy was stoned by a rowdy crowd in Kondele, forcing police to lob teargas. At least seven vehicles, including the DP's, were stoned.
However, no major casualty was reported from the incident.
Ruto was explaining his bottom-up economic model, offering youths and women groups Sh2.5 million each to spur their businesses when stones were hurled at his convoy which was forced to make a u-turn.
The DP later condemned political leaders inciting youths saying it was time to liberate Kondele from the hostility culture. He insisted that everybody is free to visit any part of the country.
He said, “The leader of ODM should stop using innocent youth to throw stones at other leaders because we have matured as a democracy. If it is stone-throwing, let them (politicians) be on the frontline with their children.”
