Kakamega School parents to part with Sh 21.6 million for fire damages

Each of the 2,200 students at Kakamega School has been ordered to pay Sh9,823 for the fire damage in the school which was estimated to be Sh21 million.

Each student is to pay the amount before being allowed to report back to school starting November 15.

The breakdown of the estimated costs of rebuilding include Sh12.1 million for rebuilding the burnt infrastructure, Sh4.1 million for double decker beds, Sh695,000 for CCTV installation, and Sh4.5 million for damaged items of 560 students.

The school highlighted the estimates in memo dated November 11.

Last Saturday, Kakamega School was closed indefinitely following a dawn fire that gutted two dormitories after two dormitories were razed down by an inferno that broke out at dawn.

The order of students reporting back to school will be as follows: Form Fours will report back on November 15; Form Ones on November 21; Form Twos on November 23 and Form Threes on November 25.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha was summoned last week by senators to discuss the wave of fires in schools.
